How to Avoid Tripping a Generator With a Bonded Neutral

By Jared G.

Does your generator outlet trip every time you connect it to your home's transfer switch?

Are you frustrated with searching for a solution through numerous bonded neutral articles and generator forums?

The solution is simple: if you have a bonded-neutral generator with full GFCI protected outlets, you'll need to get a GFI transfer switch to keep those circuits from tripping.

How To Get the Right Switch

Knowing which transfer switch will perfectly match your generator isn't difficult. The chart below will help you determine whether you need a standard transfer switch or a GFI 3-pole transfer switch, based on your generator type.

First, What Does 'Ground' Mean?

Electricity, following the path of least resistance, will always try to find a way toground itself or a way to release its electrons.

Since the earth makes a great path for electrons, that's where current will flow like in the case of ashort-circuit or a lightning strike. The danger comes into play when you are caught in-between that path. So the electricity flows through you instead of directly into the ground.

Agrounding wire(usually bare copper or green) is used to prevent shocks by routing rogue electrical currents away from a person, should a fault occur. A ground wire is attached to a metalgrounding rodburied in the earth.

Floating Neutral vs Bonded Neutral

Neutral wires aka "grounded neutral" are a source of confusion because they too are grounded; the difference being that they serve as part of the circuit by routing current back to the source.

With abonded neutral generator, the neutral is connected to the frame of the generator. Safety code requires the neutrals to be averted away from the original source (your panel) and connect to the "first means of disconnect" when using the generator. This ensures that electricity will flow properly through the neutral conductors and is delivered to one bonded location— eliminating unpredictable stray voltages caused by connecting to the ground twice.

A floating neutral generator's neutral circuit is not connected to the generator's frame or the ground, meaning it is required to connect the neutral to your existing panel neutral. Both hot and neutral conductors in the receptacles are considered "hot" on these generators, and can both be used to eliminate the risk of shock by allowing electrical currents to connect to the generator frame simultaneously during a short circuit.

Bonded Neutral vs Floating Neutral Generators - How to Avoid Tripping a Generator With a Bonded Neutral (5)What Does GFCI Mean?
GFCI stands for ground-fault circuit interrupter. This switch is needed to eliminate the ground loop and prevent the outlet from tripping.

Most built-in GFCI's found on portable generators protect the household type 15/20A, 120-volt outlets, and not on the 120/240 outlets that are used to connect to home transfer switches.

The only time you'll need a GFI transfer switch to connect the generator to your home, is if your generator is fully GFCI protected. Meaning, its 120/240-volt outlets are GFCI protected and without a GFI switch, it will create a ground loop and trip the circuit.

Is My Generator GFCI with a Bonded Neutral?

The best way to know if your generator has full GFCI protection on all its outlets including the twist-lock 120/240V is to look at the front panel, owners manual, or go to the generator product page on our site and look under the specifications tab. If you no longer have the owners manual, you can find it through ourowner's manual look-up tool.

Do Not Modify Your Generator!

Bonded Neutral vs Floating Neutral Generators - How to Avoid Tripping a Generator With a Bonded Neutral (6)Never manually disconnect a bonded neutral generator. It's not only dangerous but will void the manufacturer's warranty and against many regulations.

Using a GFI transfer switch will allow you to connect to your home's main panel without tripping, and you'll still be GFCI protected when using your generator out in the field or on the job site.

FAQs

What type of protection is needed for bonded neutral generators? ›

(B) Bonded Neutral Generators

Bonded generators shall be provided with GFCI protection on all 125-volt, 15- and 20-ampere receptacle outlets. Informational Note: Refer to 590.6(A)(3) for GFCI requirements for 15-kW or smaller portable generators used for temporary electric power and lighting.

Should a generator with floating neutral be grounded? ›

When used as a stand-alone floating neutral generator, at least the frame of the generator must to be bonded to earth ground. This involves putting a rod into the earth and attaching a ground cable from the rod to the generator frame.

Why use a floating neutral on a generator? ›

The floating neutral eliminates the potential of being shocked by contacting a hot leg and the generator frame at the same time, which could occur if an electrical device such as a hand held tool suffered from an internal short circuit.

Is a floating neutral generator safe? ›

It's not only dangerous but will void the manufacturer's warranty and against many regulations. Using a GFI transfer switch will allow you to connect to your home's main panel without tripping, and you'll still be GFCI protected when using your generator out in the field or on the job site.

Why does my Generac generator keep tripping? ›

Generac generators are equipped with overload protection. In the rare event of an overload, the generator's circuit breaker will trip, disconnecting the unit from the load. Simply correct the overload and reset the breaker in the generator.

Are Generac generators bonded or floating neutral? ›

All Generac permanent residential air-cooled generators are floating neutral generators. The neutral conductor is not bonded to the equipment grounding conductor or to the generator frame.

What happens if generator neutral is not grounded? ›

If the grounded (neutral) service conductor is opened or not provided at all, objectionable neutral current will flow on metal parts of the electrical system and dangerous voltage will be present on the metal parts providing the potential for electric shock.

Should you use a ground rod with generator? ›

If the portable generator is providing electric power to a structure by connection via a transfer switch to a structure (home, office, shop, trailer, or similar) it must be connected to a grounding electrode system, such as a driven ground rod.

How can floating neutral be protected? ›

All Appliances are Disconnected: If you unplug all appliances, lights and whatever else may be connected to the circuit, the Neutral will no longer seem to be Live because there is no longer any path from it to the Phase supply. Phase to Neutral Voltage: The meter indicates 110V AC to 330V AC.

What are the effects of floating neutral? ›

Effects of Floating Neutral:

Due to floating ground unbalance or faulty current may not detect by the relay and the connected protection system will not operate.

Do all portable generators have floating neutral? ›

Most Champion Power Equipment generators have a "floating neutral", meaning that the neutral circuit is not connected to the frame or to earth ground. This also means that both legs on the receptacle are hot legs, which is normal for floating neutral generators.

Are Honda generators floating or bonded neutral? ›

In most Honda portable gas generators the neutral circuit is not bonded to the frame of the generator or to the earth ground lead; and are commonly called Floating Neutral generators.

Can you bond a neutral with a ground wire? ›

Neutral is the return path of the current, and ground wire holds the fault current to trip the breaker in protecting the person and the facility. The neutral and ground should never be bonded together in the facility except for the main panel.

Where should you not put a portable generator? ›

NEVER run a generator indoors or in partly enclosed areas such as garages. ONLY use outdoors and far from windows, doors, vents, crawl spaces and in an area where adequate ventilation is available and will not accumulate deadly exhaust gas.

What happens if a generator is Underloaded? ›

Underloading creates low cylinder pressure, making your Diesel genset work that much harder to remain efficient and causing the build-up of soot that can quickly clog your cylinders. These issues combined will quickly grind your generator to a halt.

Does a generator transfer switch isolate the neutral? ›

Do I need to ground my generator when camping? ›

Failure to ground a generator is hazardous and can lead to: Electrical overload on your generator which can damage the wiring or other sensitive parts of the electrical system, unless your generator has overload protection like all the generators at DuroMax. Electrocution from touching ungrounded metal.

Will breaker trip if neutral touches ground? ›

When your neutral touches the ground (while the neutral is carrying a current) it creates a leak in the current because some of that current will go through the ground. If you look at the breaker without the panel cover on (be VERY careful if you do!)

Does a 3 phase generator need a neutral? ›

Fact 2: You don't need a neutral wire for balanced loads

Balanced loads are electrical loads with 3 phases, like a 3 phase motor or a 3 phase water heater.

Can I use rebar as a grounding rod for generator? ›

For a grounding system to be effective, it needs to have good conductivity. Rebar does not have as much conductivity as the more common grounding rod options. It is not as effective at dissipating static electricity. A grounding system made up of rebar may not reliably perform its job if an electrical surge did happen.

Can I just plug a generator into an outlet? ›

Under no circumstances should you plug a generator into a wall socket, known as backfeeding. If you go the transfer switch route, get a professional installation.

Do generators need an earth spike? ›

It is not unusual to see in generator operator manuals a requirement that the generator frame must be connected to an earth electrode, when in practice (given the way the alternator is configured), doing so will provide absolutely no benefit or electrical protection whatsoever.

How can neutral interactions be prevented? ›

The best way to avoid common neutral interaction is to run a separate neutral wire for each phase of the 3-phase system (see below). LDCs may be wired in series with the dimmer on the line side or load side.

Why do you not bond neutral to ground in subpanel? ›

So, why do you separate the ground and neutral in a subpanel? Because when we bond them together, it gives your neutral wire (the one carrying electrical currents BACK to the source) multiple pathways. That's how the chassis of some equipment will become energized.

Why is floating neutral in a three phase supply considered undesirable? ›

this cause neutral voltage some value and current flows between earth and neutral , this effect cause fault tripping of breaker due to relays sense by delay or indefinite timing . Hence neutral floating is dangerous for systems.

What does bonding neutral to ground do? ›

Neutral-to-ground bond is needed to properly operate the circuit breakers. Over Current Protection Devices (OCPD) such as circuit breakers and fuses actually require a short and intense INCREASE in electrical current (a short) in order to detect the fault and cut the circuit off.

What is effect of floating neutral on the three phase voltage? ›

A broken neutral on a three phase transformer will cause the voltage to float up to the line voltages depending on the load balancing on the system. This type of fault condition may damage the customers equipment connected to the supply.

What happens when a neutral object is grounded? ›

Grounding is the process of removing the excess charge on an object by means of the transfer of electrons between it and another object of substantial size. When a charged object is grounded, the excess charge is balanced by the transfer of electrons between the charged object and a ground.

Should you ground a floating neutral generator? ›

When used as a stand-alone floating neutral generator, at least the frame of the generator must to be bonded to earth ground. This involves putting a rod into the earth and attaching a ground cable from the rod to the generator frame.

Are DuroMax generators bonded neutral? ›

DuroMax open frame Generators are considered Floating Neutral Generators. This means that they do not have a bond from the Generator frame to the neutral.

How do you convert a generator to floating neutral? ›

Using a wrench or a screwdriver, remove the screw or bolt from both the neutral and the ground connections. Insert the bonding jumper wire into the connections. Tighten the screws or bolts again. Once the conversion is done, put a label on the generator which clearly indicates the changes made.

Are Honda inverter generators floating neutral? ›

All Honda inverter generators are Neutral Floating except for the EU6500 and EU7000. Certain "Industrial" Honda model exist, the EB series, which have bonded neutrals.

Why do neutral and ground need to be separated? ›

If we bond the ground wire to the neutral in the sub-panel, current will flow on both the neutral AND on the ground wire. Which means that if you do not keep the ground wires separate from the neutral wires, you will be allowing return currents to flow on the ground wires back to the main panel.

What is a floating neutral? ›

A “floating” neutral occurs when the connection to the ground breaks or becomes loose, which causes the neutral bar to “float.” This can happen in your panel or between the utility and your electric panel. It can be caused by a mechanical issue or other issues like rust or corrosion.

What happens if you mix up ground and neutral wires? ›

They could be electrocuted. Not good. So, to prevent this, the National Electrical Code prohibits the connection of the equipment ground and neutral at any point other than the service.

Which type of protection is provided on generator? ›

2. STATOR PROTECTION: 2.1 Differential protection for generators: Differential protection is used for protection of the generator against phase to earth and phase to phase fault. Differential protection is based on the circulating current principle.

Which protection is used for generator? ›

Instead of it, balance earth fault protection is used. Inter turn faults in generators cannot be detected using the Buchholz relay as there is no oil tank present in the generator as the transformer does. The transverse differential protection scheme is used for detecting an inter-turn fault in generators.

Do generators need ground fault protection? ›

Therefore, when it is in use by an employee on a construction site, a 120-volt, 15 or 20 ampere receptacle powered by a portable or vehicle-mounted generator, which is not a two-wire generator, or which is rated more than 5kw must be protected by a GFCI.

Why do you need a surge protector for a generator? ›

Surge protectors serve as a source between direct power from your utility and your home's electronics. By having a surge protector between your home and generator, you are able to stay assured that in the event of a storm your home's power is protected.

What is a generator protection relay? ›

Generator protection relays can be used to protect any size generator, and also be used as a primary or backup protection in standby generators and co-generation applications.

What type of relay is best suited for generator protection? ›

Reverse power relay is used for this purpose. As soon as the generator starts rotating in motoring mode, the reverse power relay will trip the generator set.

Do generators need to be protected from rain? ›

Instructions for a portable generator warn you not to run it in the rain. To protect it from moisture, the Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends operating it on a dry surface under an open, canopy-like structure.

How do I protect my generator during a storm? ›

Place your generator at least 6 feet away from your home, away from any door or window, with the exhaust facing away from your home. An open canopy like a carport or a well-secured tarp or quick tent could be options to keep the generator dry while operating.

What are the 3 types of generators? ›

There are three basic types of generators: whole house generators, portable generators and inverter generators.
